Do you suffer from light headaches upon standing, low blood pressure, mood swings (mostly irritability), poor concentration, joint and muscle aches, blood sugar imablance (low or high), inability to lose or gain weight, or SALT/SUGAR cravings....
There are many root causes that can be linked to these symptoms like anemia, low cholesterol, medication, chronic infection, sleep disorders, nutrient deficiency, or prolonged mental, emotional, or physical stress. It has been studied that adrenal gland is underfunctioning in many of these cases. This you may have heard as adrenal fatigue. It is one of the most underated causes of ill health and disease in America and around the world.
Medically, it is known as hypoadrenia. Convetional medicine recognizes this only as Addison's disease. Addison's disease is a disorder characterized by the adrenal glands' inability to produce enough of the stress hormone called cortisol and often the hormone aldosterone. This can lead to a breakdown of the body and even cause an acute health crisis.
Adrenal fatigue refers to under-funtioning adrenal gland not quite as severe as Addison' disease. To put this in perspective, imagine 2 ends of a spectrum. At one end is Addison's and the other end a completely healthy adrenal gland. Somewhere in between would fall adrenal fatigue.
There are 3 life-sustaining hormones that are effected. They are cortisol, pregnenolone, and DHEA. These hormones support the body's response to stress, and aoldosterone (another hormone of the adrenal gland) helps regulate blood pressure. Another portion of the organ helps produce other hormones known as adrenaline and noradrenaline which aid in repsone to stress.
By treating adrenal fatigue holistically, one can achieve recovery more effectively. In some of the listed conditions, it may take an improved adrenal function to achieve any noticeable improvement.
What you should avoid:
2) refine carbs
3) artificial sweetners
Why? Because they stress your adrenals.
Do consume: (potassium rich food)
3) coconut milk
4) WATER (no, it's not a food...)
5) good fats like olive oil and coconut oil
Best alternative treatments:
3) Homeopathic supplements
4) Nutritional IV therapy
Patients Report More Pain Relief From Acupuncture Than Conventional Treatment.
In a newer study, acupuncture has proven to be more effective than traditional treatments. This was a German study that analyzed 1,162 patient results of treatment from traditional Chinese acupuncture methods. It was compared to other treatments consisting of prescripitions, therapy, and exercise. To date, this is the largest research study of conventional non-surgical treatments vs. acupuncture.
In an interview with researcher, Dr. Heinz Andres, M.D., " acupuncture represents a highly promising and effective treatment option for chronic back pain." She also stated, "Patients experienced not only reduced pain intensity, but also reported improvementsin the disbility that often results from back pain--and therefore in their quality of life."
The only time participants were allowed to use drugs (over the counter containing NSAIDs) were when they experienced an acute flare up. The limitation was for use of 2 days per week.
Patients who received acupuncture were able to report positive responses 6 months after treatment.
The treatment they received, consisted of 10, 30 minute sessions over a 6 week period. The responses reported included 33% improvement of pain, as well as, 12% improvement in functional ability.
"Dr. Endres goes on to say, "Because acupuncture has a low risk of side effects and few contraindications, it shoud be added to the catalogue of treatmetns recommended for acute and chronic back pain, even though -- just as for any other form of treatment -- there will always be some patients who do not respond."
In Germany, acupuncture has been taken seriously as a primary treatment, and acupuncture is no longer an alternative treatment. It is now covered by state health insurance. In the United states, acupuncture doesn't have much, if any health insuracne coverage being that it is still considered an alternative treatment.
Between ginger bread houses, pies, and candy, we will have endless amount of processed food and sugar. Switch it up and go fresh. Have a bowl of fresh tomotaoes, cucumbers, and onions with a small amount of salad dressing to dip into. Endulge one day instead of all of the holiday.
Pets can help us exercise during the holidays. Get outside, take them for a walk, interact with them. We also must be responsible. Be safe with them!
Love the peolpe you're with, and enjoy the food you have. Not the other way around.
Try not to overcommit yourself during the holidays. There will be friends and family pulling you in different ways. Learn to say no: to spending, parties, unwanted guests, unwanted travel. Know what your limits and are and stick to them.
It's very simple. WASH YOUR HANDS! End of story.
We love to eat in America, especially in Alabama where I live. We love to eat so much that it's the topic of conversation and the desired choice of entertainment. Without hesitation, it is even a competition. "Bet you won't eat the rest of that moon pie". The best advice here is don't eat the rest of the moon pie. Instead try eating in moderation. Eat a little bit all day instead of eating alot all day.
The best part of what I do is give back. Helping young students or peers in practice, I've always enjoyed giving back by helping. This holiday season, try giving back in your own ways. Every town offers programs that assist the needs in extreme ways and simple ways. If you don't know where to start, contact your chamber of commerce. Many businesses participate in giving back during the seasonal times so you might find a great start there. Though the holidays are a great time to start giving, I challenge you to find ways to continue to give back through the year. If you battle a constant void in your life, giving to someone especially one in desperate need is quite rewarding and can help you fill this void because it gives you a purpose.
Put the phone and tablet down and away. Enjoy the people and the time you spend with. I went on a health mission trip to Haiti and didn't have internet or a phone to text or, even check emails for a week. You cannot understand the benefits of how relaxing that is until you are able to experience it. During the holidays, I challenge you to "lose" your phone, tablets, and internet. Love the ones you're with.
